Does Your Drinking Water Make You Ill?

By Lee Jacobs

Do you ever wonder if the water that comes out of your tap could possibly be making you ill? Well, this is not as far fetched as you may think! It's difficult to tell with water, as most municipal water looks the same, and unless you really delve further into what may be lurking within that clear liquid, how would you really know?

It's really not that difficult to find out what's in your tap water. The information is freely available to the public and this article is merely a brief summary of this information. Research scientists no longer use the term "pure" when classifying drinking water. They classify the levels of contamination as either "acceptable" or unacceptable".

Do you know why? Well, it's because virtually all of our tap water is heavily contaminated with cesspool levels of nasty viruses, heavy metals, germs and even embalming fluid! Take a look below, as this is what is found in most municipal drinking water supplies.

There are millions of kilos of harmful chemicals dumped into public water supplies every year, and this is only includes the 650 chemicals that are registered by the EPA and listed as being toxic and deleterious to a persons health. This figure does not inclue the "safe chemicals" that are dumped in the water supply for good measure.

Heavy metals, such as arsenic, lead, and high levels of mercury are found in many samples taken form municipal water supplies across the USA. Most of the time it doesn't matter if you purchase bottled water, since much of the bottle water is actually municipal water that is rebottled and sold to consumers at a huge mark up!

Infectious diseases - A study that was recently published in the Journal of American Public Health estimated that 40% of the gastrointestinal diseases in homes are picked up via the water that is delivered from the faucet at the kitchen sink.

What can be done, you might ask?

Well, that's a good question. There are many different methods of purifying water available in these modern times, but many of them have both pros and cons.

As an example, the use of carbon filtration is excellent for many contaminants across the board and leaves water tasting sweet and fresh. However, this filtration method does not remove fluoride and some of the smaller viral contaminants. For the most part this method is an excellent choice since the systems are inexpensive, successfully remove most of the organic volatiles, and remove virtually every bit of chlorine and leaves no smell.

Another method that is growing in popularity is reverse osmosis filtration. This is a very powerful method of water purification. While it effectively removes nearly all contaminants from the water, including fluoride, it also removes some of the beneficial alkaline minerals. This can result in a depletion of mineral salts which are very important.

Distillation is another method that removes virtually all contaminants, but again, the process works in much the same way as reverse osmosis systems do. Don't get me wrong - they work and work well, but in the long run, can also lead to mineral depletion.

Ionizing machines are excellent in many respects. They do nearly everything that will lead to good clean water, with the exception of removing fluoride. These systems effectively remove all of the acidic constituents while delivering alkaline water deep into the tissues of the body. This is a good choice depending on your preferences.

It often comes down to a compromise of a number of variables to have healthy, clean, and pure drinking water. By far the best option would be to install a small tank to collect water from the roof of your house and the run it through a quality alkalizing machine. Even a good dual stage carbon filter would work.

In the end, it winds up being a matter of personal preference. Keep in mind though that if you are able to keep the fluoride away from your mouth, you are better off than many others.

To good health

Alcohol Should Be Avoided While Building Muscle

By Ricardo d Argence

Believe it or not, there are those who wonder if alcohol has an effect on their muscle building activities. The answer is a resounding yes alcohol will adversely affect your work out.

Most serious body builders will reach for a protein drink before anything else. There is a very good reason for this. Protein is critical to effective muscle building and protein synthesis should not be interfered with. Alcohol will definitely impair protein synthesis.

The process that joins amino acids together to form complete proteins is called protein synthesis. When a person drinks alcohol the process is slowed by 20%.

Another critical factor in muscle building is the testosterone level in the body. You have probably noticed that women don't build the amount of muscle mass as me do. There reason for this is the low testosterone levels in women; women normally have 15-20 times less testosterone in their bodies than me do.

What does that have to do with alcohol? Alcohol decreases the amount of testosterone in the body and increases levels of estrogen.

Hydration. When you drink alcohol, the kidneys must use massive amounts of water to process the toxin. Yes, the body recognizes alcohol as a toxin. When this happens, the body can quickly become dehydrated.

Muscles are controlled my nerves and the nerves produce the stimuli to contract muscles from electrolyte minerals dissolved in water. Additionally, water will lubricate the joints and protect them from injury while working out.

Consuming alcohol also robs key vitamins from the body. It destroys vitamins such as A, B, and C. It also depletes phosphorous and calcium stores in the body. Knowing that some of the most important vitamins for building muscles are vitamins B and C, you can understand why drinking alcohol while trying to build muscle really is a big deal.

When trying to build muscle, you need to deplete the stores of fat and increase the muscle mass. Alcohol works directly against this effort. Nutritionists will tell you that alcohol contains empty calories. Empty calories have no nutritional benefit at all. Alcohol also contains twice as many carbohydrates and calories as protein does.

While we are discussing calories, it should be noted that calories taken in while drinking are the first ones that are burned for energy. This means that all of the fat that is stored will remain in storage. It will not be burned for energy until every last alcohol calorie is burned. This is not a very good combination for a person that is trying to build muscle or lose fat.

We have looked at most of the major points regarding bodybuilding and alcohol, but you should also think about the effects of alcohol on other parts of the body. Prolonged use of alcohol can lead to diabetes, liver damage, and a host of other medical problems. When you have any of these problems it will make it more difficult to build muscle. Is it really worth it?

Anti-Aging Creams - Do They Work?

By George Stanley

Degeneration of the human body and its skin is an inexorable effect of aging. We, however, do not (and should not) have to lose the war with time and look older than we feel! All we have to do to slow the aging process is to follow a few essential body-preserving habits while using a natural anti-aging cream in order to look and feel wonderful for years and years to come.

If a person's skin does not have enough collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, it will age prematurely. Sunlight, with its ultraviolet waves, is but one of many free radicals that increase this damage every single day. Therefore, to at once aid your skin in the fight against skin aging and assist in its restoration and preservation, you must seek out an anti-aging cream that contains the correct quantities of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Furthermore, while using the best quality anti-aging cream available, you should adhere to the following routines to protect your skin and your immune system from the ravages of free radicals and the aging process.

Make friends with the shade! If you have a tan, you have damaged skin; it's that simple. We want to believe that a golden tan is a sign of vivaciousness, but this is incorrect. A tan is your skin's reaction to sun damage: it is trying to heal itself. Lying out in the sun or spending time in a tanning bed is an effort on your part to age your own skin! In tandem, your exposure may lead to skin cancer. While you are unable to avoid the sun entirely, still-in order to preserve your youthful appearance-you must apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 to any areas that face long-term exposure.

Believe it or not, the skin that covers your body is a living organ. Healthy routines that protect your internal immune system will therefore aid to better the look of your skin. Keep it appearing healthy and young by consuming at least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water per day. Eat healthful foods that contain large amounts of antioxidants and vitamins. Be sure to add a daily multivitamin to your diet. Engage in an aerobic activity on a regimented basis. Your heart loves aerobic activity, and so does your immune system and your skin!

Do not smoke! Cigarettes and/or cigars ("cancer-sticks") are filled with carcinogens-toxins that exacerbate the aging process and wreak havoc on your heart, your immune system, and your skin. Some forms of alcohol are, however, actually good for you. Drink a glass of red wine and, as scientific examinations have demonstrated, you will imbibe a large amount of healthy antioxidants. Even so, avoid abusing alcohol.

Consider getting a facial massage on a regular basis. Your face, which is usually the first part of your body that others see, and is the most obvious place where aging is evident, has hundreds of muscles on it. Massaging these muscles relaxes and strengthens them, helping to prevent your face from sagging or otherwise appearing older than it should.

It is imperative that you discover and use the best anti-aging cream possible. Such a cream will contain the perfect balance of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, allowing your face to experience a perfected balance of all three. Be sure that the anti-aging cream also is comprised of antioxidants; these are vital for their toxin-eradicating properties.

Steer clear of chemically-produced creams. These are usually ineffective, and even dangerous, generating the appearance of redness, inflaming and irritating the skin, or drying it out. Instead, use only natural, organic anti-aging creams made from natural ingredients. The proper anti-aging cream will soak into all seven layers of your skin, revitalizing it at the cellular level, helping you to maintain your youthful visage for decades into the future.

Kinoki Foot Patches Do They Work

By Ron Cripps

The Kinoki detox foot patches are a creation that has been greatly successful in Asia, and they are starting to achieve fame in the USA. If you are looking at a body detox using foot pads then you should consider using these to remove some of the toxins from your body.

The Kinoki detox foot patches are produced in Japan, and they comprise Asian old-fashioned formulas mixed with the most up-to-date technology in order for them to attain their effects. That is what the commercials say anyway I can not tell you for certain whether the Ancient herbal formula story is true. But I can pass on to you that they have given me results.

I trust that the basis that the Kinoki detox foot patches are doing well is because they work on a proven theory: the eradication of toxins by means of the pores of the skin, commonly known as perspiration or sweating.

As we all know, perspiration is one of the most important tools our body has to eradicate bad toxins. We are constantly sweating, whether you understand it or not. That is why we have a tendency to smell unpleasant after a day if we do not wash, even if we haven't finished physical activity. When we sweat and smell, it is because we have purged some toxins through sweating and they are even now everywhere over our skin. Your nose is revealing to you that those toxins ought to be washed off.

When we participate in a physical activity, you sweat more, and thus we smell even poorer in a much shorter amount of time.

The most prominent parts of the body for this are, our armpits and your feet are the ones that sweat at a faster pace, which is also why these body parts are inclined to smell shoddier than the other parts of our body.

Kinoki detox foot patches bring into play this normal body detox system and improve it for greatest effect. Their logic is uncomplicated, when you go to sleep, you put on them to the soles of your feet, and you leave then on while you sleep. While you sleep, the detox foot patches will suck up your body's toxins and cleanse your body. When you awaken, you will feel a lot better. The detox foot patches will have turned brown and very frequently smell wayward, because of the toxins they absorbed.

Kinoki detox foot patches can be cheap or pricey, depending where you obtain them. I can not say I have seen any variation from detox foot patches bought for less online or in pharmaceutical stores.

Some individuals claim that these detox foot patches are bogus and don't in fact help you. However, I have seen results and I put in a good word for them. If you are tentative regarding them, I recommend you buy yourself a only some of them and test them out. They are not really pricey. That way, you can make a conclusion based on your own experience.

The Safety Behind Proper Colon Cleansing

By Casey Wigwire

If you're concerned with safe colon cleansing, read on. Cleansing the colon is good for you regardless of the method you choose, but there are varying degrees of safety amongst the different methods. As with all medical treatments some are more effective than others and some have more risk than others. When people think of colon cleaning, they typically think of three ways to colon cleanse.

Have you ever tried to find out what a colon cleanse process actually means? While almost 90% of the world's total population uses colon cleansing on a regular basis, only a handful are actually aware of its actual meaning. Kindly do not confuse a colon cleansing process with the application of laxatives, as both are fairly different.

The second method people usually consider is colon hydrotherapy. This is an effective way to cleanse the colon, but it is not without risk. The primary danger in hydrotherapy is infection. The equipment used in a hydrotherapy clinic is not disposable which means it is used on more than one person. This is not a problem if it sterilized properly, but if a mistake is made it can have serious consequences to your health.

A colon cleanse process is also considered as an essential means of ensuring that you maintain a healthy body. If you are using a natural colonic cleanser, you can hope to get rid of chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, gas, indigestion and even bloating of the abdominal wall.

If you want to remain fit and cleanse your body of virulent waste matter, you need to try and make use of a natural cleansing agent on a regular basis. Once your body is fit and your weight maintained, you can easily hope to live a healthy and prosperous life.

Is it a Heart Attack or a Rotator Cuff Injury?

By Dr Jason Fowler

The great TV classic ER helps teach armchair physicians to become amateur diagnosticians. He's in shock! She has kidney stones! Rule-out pheochromocytoma!

But sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

You have learned somewhere - on the network news, in the Science section of The New York Times, or in a CPR class at your job - that shoulder pain can mean you're having a heart attack. Now, seemingly out of the blue, your shoulder begins to ache and throb. Very concerned, you rush to the local emergency room.

The resident's first question, of course, is "where does it hurt"? You point to your right shoulder and blurt out, "Am I having a heart attack?" The resident smiles, gently reassuring. "A heart attack might give you pain in your left shoulder," she says. "Have you been to the gym lately? This could be a rotator cuff strain."

The resident knows that heart attack symptoms usually involve chest pain (in two-thirds of cases), and may include faintness, shortness of breath, sweating, and a feeling of impending doom.1 Chest pain may spread to the back, jaw, and arms. Left arm pain may radiate to the inside of the forearm and the ring and little fingers. So, shoulder pain by itself probably doesnt suggest a heart attack.

She orders an MRI which shows mild damage to the right rotator cuff. What's going on? What exactly is the rotator cuff?

A rotator cuff is a muscular sheath that surrounds the head of the arm bone (the humerus) and the entire shoulder joint (really, two joints - the acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints). The four muscles that comprise the rotator cuff help raise the arm to the front and the side and help turn the shoulder inward and outward.

If you are a sports fan, you know that rotator cuff injuries affect baseball pitchers, tennis players, swimmers, and football players. Such injuries are due to repetitive motion, and may also result from falling on the shoulder or arm or lifting heavy weights.

Rotator cuff injuries may also be slowly developing and chronic, related to arthritic and degenerative changes in the rotator cuff tendon and the two shoulder joints. Low-grade pain may develop, and the pain can become aching, throbbing, and chronic. Raising the arm may cause pain, and there may be loss of mobility.2

In the above-40 population, lack of exercise and chronically poor posture may contribute to rotator cuff problems. Sitting at a desk all day, with your neck jutting forward and slumped shoulders, places long-term mechanical stress on the rotator cuff.

Chiropractic treatment can be very useful in helping to rehabilitate chronic rotator cuff injuries. The chiropractic physician is expert in evaluating postural problems and associated spinal conditions. By providing effective treatment, postural corrections, and rehabilitative exercise, chiropractors offer a comprehensive therapeutic program to reduce pain, improve shoulder mobility, and regain function.

How To Benefit From LED Lighting In Your Kitchen

By Abigail Monot

Really good kitchen lighting designs characteristically use a great deal of lighting - and we're not talking about putting a few extra roses on the ceiling Kitchen lighting requires all manner of different types of light to handle the requirements of many different zones. Just about the worst lighting solution for a kitchen is the use of bright fluorescent strip lights on the ceiling. Sure, they're unquestionably very bright - but cold, flat and likely to induce a headache in less time than it takes to soft boil an egg.

An obvious problem with central ceiling lights in a kitchen is that you inevitably create dark spots and are always standing in your own shadow. A common solution to this is to install banks of halogen down lights uniformly across the ceiling with additional lighting for worktops and hobs.

This certainly does the job fairly well, but is not without its own list of issues: halogen lights run at a very high temperature; they have a short lifespan; and they are without question the most costly solution as regards running kitchen lighting. A staggering ninety percent of the cost of halogen based lighting (and indeed, incandescent lighting in general) is the electricity they quite literally burn.

This one fact helps explain the growing popularity of cool, super energy efficient LED kitchen lights. For mains powered lighting you simply replace all existing GU10 halogen lamps with equivalent GU10 LED lights. For low voltage systems, you first replace existing 12 volt transformers with a smaller number of constant voltage 12 volt LED drivers (each can power a number of light fittings) then replace MR16 halogens with LED light bulbs.

When installing LED spotlights there are 3 main areas to bear in mind, these being: brightness (or luminosity); colour temperature (whether the light appears cool and blue or warm and yellow); and beam angle (tightly focused or widely dispersed). It's a good idea to get as close as possible on these three areas to the qualities of the halogen lamps you're replacing.

It has become the norm to measure brightness according to wattage, but the wattage ratings for LED light bulbs are approximately 10% compared to normal incandescent or halogen bulbs of the same brightness. Accordingly you should look to replace a 35w halogen lamp with 3-4w LED and a 50w with probably a 5w LED.

How cool or warm a light appears is graded according to "color temperature". LED lights come in a wide range of white color temperatures (not to mention actual "colors"), but historically it was easier to manufacture blue LEDs and hence many cheap LEDs exhibit a cold/bluish tint. However, if you specify warm white (technically a temperature below 3,500 Kelvins) you should get a fair approximation of the white light normally created by halogen lamps.

A narrow beam angle, say 45 degrees, makes any light appear tighter and more contained to a defined spot, whereas a much wider 120 degrees spreads the light out evenly, eliminating glare and "hot-spots". Quite possibly the best LED spot light currently available that acts as a straightforward halogen replacement is the Sharp Zenigata.

Determining how artificial light appears to the eye often owes less to the light itself than to the surface it is aimed at. A warm feeling is easily obtained by pointing spot lighting at areas that are themselves warmly colored, such as terracotta tiling, any type of wood or even just a warmly painted wall. By contrast, a dramatic effect can be had by simply throwing blue LED light against dark or hard surfaces - blue or green tiles, granite, enamel and steel all lend themselves to this treatment.

Mixing a variety of lights that offer different characteristics with a range of textures and colors makes it possible to obtain an extensive palette of effects for the various zones in your kitchen. LED strip lighting systems in particular offer all manner of options for accenting plinths, coving, worktops and pretty much anything else you could imagine. But at the end of the day though, once you're done playing with all the new ideas on offer, try and settle on just a few designs that really appeal - it's quite surprising how impressive even a bit of LED kitchen lighting appears.

How Best To Implement Your Detox Menu

By Ferdinand Emy

If you live in a city, have a desk job (and a pesky one at that), drive an hour at least each day, and dont do exercise, then you likely are forcing your liver to do extra work trying to do away with all that excess of toxins.

Why is my body full of toxins?

Gotten from different souces, the most evident toxin is the repeated pollution in the air that we breathe in mega cities. We also get toxins from all the chemicals that are in our food, specially junk food or food that has been processed to the point that it loses its nutritional value. Preservatives and colorants are some of these chemicals. Also, when we stress, we add our own toxins to the mix.

A detox menu is recommended so as to cleanse our bodies from these noxious toxins.

What should be the reason for my considering a detox menu?

A detox menu will do away with those toxins in your body. If you follow one, you will be more heartier and even more energetic. In addition, since the liver is the organ that handle the natural detoxification of our bodies, you will make your liver's work much simpler. Doing this will drastically reduce the dangers of a serious liver failure future liver desease.

What does a detox menu consist of?

While a detox menu varies from one health specialist to another, there are various common items to most.

First of all, a common request is the prohibition of alcohol. If taken in big quantities for a long period of time, alcohol is very challenging to eliminate from our liver, and it may begin to pile up scar tissue on the liver, resulting in cirrhosis.

How is the Nursing Career is Changing and what this Means for Healthcare Education

By Sophie Peters

What do the changing trends tell us about the future of nursing careers? In the next decade or two, it might look very different from what we see today. With new technologies, advancements in drugs and treatments, changes in healthcare policy, insurance policies and coverage, it it likely that the healthcare profession including nursing would have to reinvent itself. As an example, as technology continues to advance many healthcare functions can become automated. These include patient records, medical documentation, and use of smart beds used to monitor patients' vital signs, more use of bar coding, and automated medicine carts which could be used to cut down time and reduce errors that result from dispensing medical drugs. In addition, voice-activated technology can be used to reduce the amount of written documentation. Tasks such as serving meals can also be taken over by trained medical aids in order to free up nurses to provide the human touch to their patients.

Due to nursing shortages, hospitals and other healthcare institutions have to use their staff more judiciously. Nurses will be tasked with spending more time at the bedside to serve as educators and care coordinators. This will refocus their role with their patients. As the lengths of hospital stays getting shorter due to medical costs, nurses must make most use of the time they spend with patients. Nurses will also work in more administrative roles and supervising positions. Given that, they will need to know how to access and retrieve knowledge and information in order to share it with their patients and their families.

Advancements in technology will also likely attract more males and minorities into the nursing profession. Thus, more emphasis would have to be put on supporting teaching careers and recruiting instructors from a diversity of cultural and educational backgrounds to cater to this shift, and to relive the shortage of nursing school instructors. In addition, more loans and financial scholarships at the graduate level (masters and Phd) will have to be increase to encourage more trained medical professionals to serve as teaching staff. In addition nursing colleges would have to be willing to pay the instructors higher salaries to attract and retain teaching staff.

As healthcare trends stand today, it is safe to assume that if the the nursing shortage persists, long-term stays and hospital admissions may have to be reserved for the patients that need it most. Thus, the number of outpatients will likely increases as will the need for more home-healthcare nursing professionals. It is also conceivable that nurses will play a larger role in insurance agencies, health consulting firms, and healthcare technology and software development companies. Nurses will also be involved more deeply with community health and population-based health work. Their responsibilities will include identifying health risks and setting up healthcare priorities for populations at higher risk. Healthcare professionals will also be involved in community education, and working with healthcare institutions and insurance agencies to develop healthcare programs that are designed to promote health and save costs for both the patients and their healthcare providers.

Medical personnel who work in gerontology and geriatrics, for example nurse practitioners also face what would be considered a bright future in terms of their careers. With people in the baby boom generation reaching retirement medical professionals will be required to focus on patients in this generational group. Further, nurses who are also baby boomers might not be ready to retire and may find themselves in a role of consulting. They would serve as healthcare providers who they themselves understand the needs of their patients better.

As technology and research progresses, nurses would focus more on preventing the illnesses rather than treatment. Also, drugs designed for healthcare that targets diseases before they start, and identifying risks for those diseases will enhance preventive care. This means that people are going to have to learn to take care of themselves more. The nursing shortage and rising health care costs will also put pressure on the health care system to change from an illness model to a wellness and prevention model.

Despite what the future holds for the medical profession, nurses and other healthcare workers need to prepare for changing trends and for their evolving roles. In addition to remaining lifelong learners, they will be part of the transformative future of healthcare and medical care. But as you can already guess, this is far easier when one is passionate about their career.

The Health Boosting Properties of Fruit Juice

By Danny Redrow

The health benefits of fruit juices are many. The drink provides many health benefits for all ages. It is good in taste and simultaneously offers a way to boost your health. Since fruits are full of nutrients and vitamins, making a fruit juice by mixing different fruits makes it more beneficial than eating the fruits on there own. A great juicer like the Jack Lalanne juicer will help you achieve the best out of your fruit.

Mixing the fruits in a drink mixes the properties. This allows the different benefits to work in synergy which therefore boosts the property of a drink. People taking fruit juices have a lower risk of suffering from chronic diseases than their counterparts. Fruit juices make people leaner, increases their body's insulin sensitivity and lowers the risk of obesity. The risks of illnesses such as diabetes, stroke and heart disease can all be lowered by regularly drinking fruit juice. A lower body mass index and smaller waist circumferences are all characteristics of people who regularly consume fruit juice.

Blueberry juice has been shown to have many health benefits due to its high nutritional content. Infections of the urinary tract can be lowered due to these benefits. It has been demonstrated to kill many different viruses and helps prevent diarrhoea. People who have had stokes or heart problems can also be helped.

Apple juices contain vitamins and mineral nutrients like boron which helps in strengthening the bones. Age related diseases and the effects of ageing may be lowered by the many polyphenols found in this juice. It can also sharpen the memory and positively affects the learning ability. The progress of Alzheimer's disease may be reduced by regularly consuming this juice.

People suffering from kidney stones can be assisted by drinking orange juice. The body's cholesterol levels can be lowered by this drink as well as the regulation of the body's metabolism. Orange juices provide a great supply of Vitamin C which is a particularly powerful agent in the fighting free radicals in the body. The blood flow to the heart muscle may be increased and the body's cholesterol levels lowered by pomegranate juice. Prostate cancer growth in males may be lowered as well.

It is worth noting that not all juicers are the same. Wheatgrass juicers are different to fruit juicers which you need to take note of. The Jack Lalanne juicers are perfect for juicing fruit and vegetables.

Fruit juices are very effective compared to colas which contain nothing but empty calories. Drinking a glassful in the morning with breakfast makes you feel fresh. Obesity is an epidemic worldwide, caused by eating and drinking too many junk foods and colas. Drinking fruit juice regularly may help reduce this. Regularly consuming fruit juice on a daily basis can help in maintaining a healthy diet, which should be our main concern.

Citrus Juice and Its Health Boosting Properties

By Leanne Tyler

Citrus juice has significant benefits to offer that cannot be provided from other fruit juices. It is their high concentrations of Vitamin C which makes them highly desirable and beneficial to our health. Surprisingly, human beings are one of the few species that does not make its own supply of this vital vitamin.

It is believed that many of the illnesses we suffer from today such as cancer and viruses are due to our lack of Vitamin C. This is in large due to the fact that this chemical destroys a lot of the free radicals that enter and attack our body by damaging the cells. We ate much more fruit in the past than we do today. Our hands are highly developed for picking and grasping fruit from the trees and on the ground.

It is believed our bodies compensated by producing less of this important vitamin until today where we produce none. This causes us a problem as the modern diet contains very little fruit and, as such, our Vitamin C intake is inadequate.

Juicing has become a way for us to reverse this and start increasing our intake of vitamins again. It is also an enjoyable, fast and refreshing way to boost our health. It does not require any regular expense of Vitamins or supplements and is all natural.

Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling has been one of the greatest supporters of Vitamin C and the health benefits it has to give. The quantities that he advised to take in though were quite large. It is generally thought we do not need to take in this much on a daily basis. He believed that it would prevent many of the illnesses that we suffer from today.

Fruits such as oranges and lemons contain large amounts of Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid. Each orange contains about 50mg of ascorbic acid per 100 grams of fruit. There is about 70mg per slice. The health authorities recommend a daily allowance of 60mg. this, however, is only the minimal amount to prevent scurvy, the classical disease that causes bleeding gums.

Investing in a citrus juicer or fruit juicer is an investment in your health. As you can see from this article, many of the essential nutrients we require can be obtained in this healthy, natural way.

Lose Weight With Acai Berry Supplements

By Dennis Snyder

A question that is being asked by just about everyone wanting to lose weight today is if acai berry supplements really help us to lose unsightly fat. The acai is a great antioxidant and in my humble opinion it does not only help us to loss weight but has a tremendous amount of other benefits.

The acai berry is a small purplish grape sized berry found in the jungles of the Amazon. It is actually 80% seed and 20% fruit pulp and has been said to be one of the healthiest berries on this planet. Supposedly it also boosts the energy of the human body and again I would agree with that in my experience of taking the acai berry supplements.

One of the main claims of the acai supplements is that they help with a natural weight loss. What it does not do is suppress the appetite like so many other so-called nutrients. What the acai fruit does is to boost the metabolism so that calories are burned faster.

In other words, if we put into practice the following things we will see additional natural weight loss with acai berry supplements. First we need to eat a sensible diet. Do not expect the acai berry to help one iota if you are going to pig out on junk food all day and night. It just will not work the supplements are not a quick easy fix.

Being a couch potato is also not a healthy thing to do. So get those lazy bones up and active in some sort of regular exercise routine. Even if you just walk for 20 to 30 minutes four or five times a week you will feel better and lose weight.

Once you get on a plan to eat right (at least most of the time) and get regular exercise you will lose weight whether you take acai berry supplements or not. The benefits to taking the supplement is that once you hit that plateau of weight loss it will take you to the next step. Because it will boost your fat burning you will see a dramatic difference in a short time because of your new routine.

I do not have a very physically active job in fact I am behind the computer most of the day. I never did eat very good and it definitely showed in my belly fat that was hanging over my belt. Once I decided to get started eating sensibly and exercising I saw my spare tire begin to shrink up. The problem was that after a short time I just sort of leveled off. That is when I started to take the acai berry supplements and with no other changes the weight again began to drop off.

What happened was that I did not have to change anything else except to remember to take two capsules a day. No foul taste and it worked like a charm. I once again started to see the weight come off. That was a year and a half ago and I still take the supplements and have maintained a great weight and have lost my belly fat.

Achilles Tendon Facts

By Dr. Stefan Tarlow

The Achilles Tendon: Injuries & Treatment

Of all of the tendons in the human body, the Achilles tendon is the largest. The muscles at the posterior of the lower leg are attached to the calcaneous (heel bone) by the Achilles tendon. Because if it's location, the Achilles tendon must withstand a great deal of pressure during strenuous exercise - especially sporting activities that involve a lot of pivoting.

There are two types of injury to which the Achilles tendon is particularly susceptible:

1. Achilles Tendonitis is inflammation caused by overuse.

#2 The Achilles tendon can be torn during strenuous activity.

What is Achilles Tendonitis?

When you suddenly increase the intensity of your training or change to a new kind of training without completely conditioning your body to it, you may be subject to Achilles tendonitis. You may be particularly prone to it if you add sudden vigorous activity like uphill running to your training schedule. Additionally, if you take a long break from training and then start right back up at your peak level, you may cause Achilles tendonitis.

You may experience Achilles tendonitis as mild pain after exercise that worsens as time passes. Several hours after completing your exercise routine, the pain may become severe. After rest, you may feel stiffness, tenderness, and swelling. Movement may improve these symptoms.

In the case of a torn Achilles tendon surgical repair may be indicated. Toughened, fibrous tissue and tears can be removed with surgery. Following surgery, rehabilitation will speed recovery and help avert future ankle weakness.

Specifics About Achilles Tendon Surgery

You may overstretch your Achilles tendon during vigorous activity. This often happens during sports. You may actually hear a crack or a snap when the injury occurs. The tear is usually located just above the calcaneous (heel bone). It may be complete or partial.

If this happens, you may find that you are not able to bend your foot into a downward position or even to walk normally. This type of injury is very painful and causes a lot of swelling around the heel.

When you experience a complete rupture, you will usually need surgery. Following your surgery, you will probably be required to wear a walking cast or boot for about 3 months to hold the ankle stable.

Although it is possible to treat torn ligaments non-surgically with a below-knee cast, this is not recommended. It takes longer for the ends of the torn tendon to heal naturally, and there is more likelihood that the tendon will experience damage in the future.

With surgery, there is a much better chance of recovering fully. This is why athletes prefer to have the surgery. It allows them to return to their former level of activity with confidence after an Achilles tendon injury.

Useful Muscle Building Tips to Achieve Great Results in the Gym

By Ricardo d Argence

Weight training and muscle building aren't just great for bodybuilders. They should be important parts of any person's healthy exercise routine. Whether you're working out to get healthy or to improve the definition of your muscles, the tips below will help you reach your goal.

Increase your protein intake. Protein is very important for enhancing and building up muscles. If you don't have adequate protein, you won't gain any additional muscle no matter how much effort you exert.

However, the question has always been how much is enough? The problem is that many of the best protein sources, such as milk and red meat, are also high in fat which you don't want.

The one cardinal rule for any bodybuilder that is really dedicated is to eat one gram of protein for every pound of body weight. This entails that if your total weight is 170 lbs, then you must eat 170 grams of protein each day to generate adequate muscle mass. If the fat content is an issue you could opt for other low fat protein sources like fish and even chicken instead of consuming red meat.

Permit time for recovery. There are some bodybuilders that actually become obsessed with working out and bodybuilding. You will be able to see them in any gym every single day performing these routines. You might be impressed at first, but take into account that they are likely hurting their bodies by exercising so rigorously.

There is a reason for this, and it's because body building, as medical research has shown, is not solely based on exercise. Your body needs to have a chance to recover a little bit, especially in between tough exercises. It also needs well balanced meals and plenty of nutrients. If you don't have these things then it's most likely that all of your efforts will go to waste and you won't buildup any muscles at all. Though you could probably expect a trip to the hospital sometime in the near future.

Make sure that you get adequate sleep. Though sleeping might seem like a waste of time, your ability to gain muscle mass depends on it. Most of the bodily functions that need to occur will occur while you're sleeping!

Silly as it might sound, there's actually a reason for that. That reasons is that the body is free to use more energy while you're sleeping, and that's energy you may have to use while you're awake. While your sleeping the body can create protein, and that is a great help when it comes to developing muscles.

If you're only sleeping a few hours every night, you're not giving your body enough time to do the work it needs to complete. Make sure to sleep for at least eight hours every night.

Make sure that you use Compound Movements. This essentially means lifting weights as opposed to other types which may not work, or will only work on certain muscles.

Regardless, you'll have to have the information needed to life those weights in the right way. Make sure that you get weights that have enough weight for you, so that you're sure they will effect your muscles in the way that you want.

By no means does this mean that you should grab the heaviest weights on the rack. This only means that you should feel your muscles functioning every single time that you lift your weight. You need to benefit from your efforts, and in order to do that you need to pick the weight that is right for you. If you're just starting out, you might have to use a 20 pound weight whereas others may go a lot heavier. It all depends on the weight lifer.

A Close Look at Natural Asthma Solutions

By Kathy Sand

An asthma attack is typically characterized by shortness of breath, uncontrollable coughing and general difficulty of breathing. These conditions are caused by the inflammation of bronchial tubes and air passages of the lungs. That is why asthma is a chronic disorder as the bronchial tubes will regularly suffer from constriction.

What are the Causes of Asthma?

There are many conditions that cause asthma. Foremost of these conditions are genetic factors. Experts believe that asthma is hereditary as parents who have the condition will have children displaying symptoms of asthma.

Environmental factors also play significant roles in triggering asthma attacks. Asthmatics often display sensitivity to several allergens such as tobacco smoke, dust, chemicals, gasses, and even pollens from plants. Exposure to cold weather or humidity can also trigger asthma attacks.

Because asthma is normally triggered by allergy, an attack can also be triggered by dietary factors. Consumption of processed foods with high levels of salt can trigger an attack. High calorie seafood like crustaceans can also cause asthma attacks.

Asthma is the most troublesome bronchial disorder. If you have asthma in your adult life, then it would be a lifelong suffering.

Overview of Natural Remedies

Bronchodilators are the most common medications administered for asthma sufferers. The problem is that bronchodilators have several unpleasant side effects. Patients taking bronchodilators can suffer from slight muscle tremors, loss of appetite, and dizziness. That is why asthma patients are looking for natural solutions that can relieve symptoms and prevent attacks of asthma.

The following natural remedies are just some of the solutions that can effectively prevent and treat asthma.

1. Acupuncture - Acupuncture works by establishing the balance of positive and negative energies in the body. According to Chinese medicine, the inflammation of bronchial tubes is caused by severe imbalance of these energies. Regular therapy with acupuncture will maintain balanced energy flow thus preventing asthma attacks.

2. Taking Antioxidants, Vitamins and Minerals - Antioxidants, vitamins and minerals can be used to prevent asthma. Natural supplements can strengthen the respiratory system thus preventing episodes of asthma attacks.

Taking antioxidants daily can help prevent inflammation of the bronchial tubes. Daily medication of vitamin E, vitamin C, and bioflavonoids can strengthen the body's defenses against irritants and free radicals that cause bronchial spasms and inflammation.

3. Alternative Herbal Medicines - Another popular and cost effective solution to treat asthma is to use herbal medicines. The natural healing ingredients of herbal medicines will strengthen your respiratory system which can prevent asthma.

You can use minced garlic and ginger to make a broth. Take this broth twice daily as preventive measure against asthma.

Pure honeybee is also a good alternative treatment for asthma. Just put pure and unadulterated honey sin a jar filled with boiling water. Inhale the steam and the inflammation of the air ways will subside. You can also take one tablespoon of honey everyday in order to prevent further asthma attacks.

There are still other natural remedies that can prevent and treat asthma. You should explore them to find out which natural solution would be effective for your condition.

This does indeed work quite well, but brings its own set of problem: halogen lamps run at very high temperatures; they don't last well; and they are pretty much the most expensive possible way to light a kitchen. Over ninety percent of the cost of incandescent lighting in general (and halogen lamps in particular) is the electricity they consume.

This almost certainly accounts for the surge in popularity of low energy, low temperature LED kitchen lighting. With mains lighting (GU10 type fittings) it's just a matter of replacing existing spotlights with their LED counterparts. For low voltage fittings (MR16 type), first replace regular 12v transformers with one (or possibly more, according to the number of lights) 12v constant voltage LED driver before switching to LED equivalent light bulbs.

The three main aspects to consider when installing LED spotlights are: luminosity (brightness); colour temperature (how cool/blue or warm/yellow); and beam angle. Try to match these as close as possible to the characteristics of the halogen lamps you might otherwise have considered using.

We are used to measuring brightness in terms of wattage, but an LED light bulb will have a wattage rating at least ten percent that of it's equivalent incandescent or halogen bulb. Therefore, when replacing a 35w halogen lamp use an LED of 3w or above, and likewise replace a 50w with a 5w LED, etc.

One of the key factors to how any artificial light appears is not so much the light itself as the surface it shines on. To warm things up, point spot lighting at warmly colored areas (terracotta tiles, natural wood or simply a warmly painted wall). Alternatively, create dramatic effects by for example directing blue LEDs at fairly dark surfaces - blue LEDs reflected off blue, green, granite and steel can look stunning.

Heart Attack or Rotator Cuff Injury?

By Dr Jason Fowler

The great TV classic ER helps teach armchair physicians to become amateur diagnosticians. He's in shock! She has kidney stones! Rule-out pheochromocytoma!

But sometimes a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing!

You've learned somewhere - on the network news, in the Science section of The New York Times, or in a CPR class at your job - that shoulder pain can mean you're having a heart attack. Seemingly out of the blue, your shoulder begins to ache and throb.

The rotator cuff is a muscular sheath that surrounds the head of the arm bone (the humerus) and the entire shoulder joint (really, two joints - the acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints).

Low-grade pain may develop, and the pain may become aching, throbbing, and chronic. Raising the arm may cause pain and there may be loss of mobility.2

In the above-40 population, lack of exercise and chronically poor posture may contribute to rotator cuff problems. Sitting at a desk all day with the neck jutting forward and slumped shoulders, places long-term mechanical stress on the rotator cuff.

Share a Special Morning with A Banana Pancake Recipe

By Lenise Ramsey

Why in the world would you need a banana pancake recipe? Well, you never know these days when you might get a chance to have a lazy sleeping-in kind of morning, with nothing to do but listen to the rain outside. What a treat to be able to fix a yummy batch of banana pancakes to share with someone you love! Jack Johnson sings about this luxury in his new song, "Banana Pancakes." He says, "Let's pretend that it's still raining; there's no need to go outside. I'll make you banana pancakes, pretend like it's the week-end; let's pretend it all the time."

When was the last time you got to enjoy a homemade breakfast with the ones you love on a Saturday or Sunday morning? Can't remember, huh? If you're like most people, even your week-ends get filled up with hectic activities and you hardly ever get any down-time with your family, especially in the mornings. How's does the thought of sharing a nice hot batch of banana pancakes sound?

If you're like most people, and don't have the time to make many homemade dishes, you may think that making banana pancakes is complicated. The truth is that there are many different ways to create this tantalizing dish at home, and you can choose from the exotic gourmet recipe to a very simple and easy one. Whatever kind you want to make, they all use common ingredients and recipes are fairly easy to find.

If you have milk (or buttermilk), flour, sugar, eggs, and butter or margarine, you can make any basic pancake recipe. Of course, you also need bananas for a banana pancake recipe. How you prepare the bananas for the batter is the main part that differs in each banana pancake recipe. Some recipes say to mash or food process the bananas, some say to cut into large or smalls pieces.

To cook the pancake, you can invest in fancy appliances like the pancake cooker that works like a waffle maker, cooking both sides of the pancake at the same time. But you don't have to go with anything so high tech. Any flat cooking surface will do. Some people like griddles, and you can get them in electric models as well frying pan varieties for the stovetop. The truth is, any old frying pan will do, as long as you coat it well with oil, butter or margarine, or cooking spray before pouring in the batter.

When you know how you plan to cook your pancake, you are ready to get the job done. When your pan is heated and coated with butter or oil, pour portions of the batter into circles around the surface of the pan. You can choose to make small pancakes or larger ones by the size of the circle you pour. Just remember that the larger the pancake the harder it will be to turn without breaking apart. Once your circles of batter start bubbling on the top, use a spatula to flip them over and cook on the other side. Remember that when you are making banana pancakes, you will need to cook them a little longer on each side than plain buttermilk pancakes.

Get this complete banana pancake recipe here. This site also has links to several other types of banana pancake recipes from easy to more sophisticated. See which one sounds like the banana pancake recipe you want to try for your family this week-end.

Grow Taller Today With These Useful Tips

By Mbouda Koupitt

Do you wish you could grow taller? Youre not the only one. Thousands of people around the world are unhappy with how they look and seek to change it. Fortunately, there are ways that work.

If you want to make your height taller, its best to start when youre young. When your body is still growing, you can enhance the process by maintaining a good diet and exercising regularly. In fact, its very important that you do both of these things, lest your health suffer.

When we are babies, some of our bones are composed of cartilage. This cartilage shifts and melds and ossifies over time, forming the bones we have in adulthood. During this long process, we go from having 300 bones to only 206! In the middle of this, when we reach puberty, cartilage growth plates on our bones start to lengthen gradually. However, once these growth plates are done growing, no amount of stretching or exercise will make them lengthen by even a centimeter.

Exercising to make your height taller does work to some extent, but you must do so when you are still growing. There are many scams on the market today that claim to know exercises that are able to stretch your bones after theyve stopped growing. This doesnt work. Nothing can make your bones grow again once youve hit adulthood.

Your posture is also extremely important, both for your appearance and your health. While slouching can actually make you look shorter and results in a plethora of health complications, sitting up straight with your shoulders back and your head up can not only make you look taller, but it prevents backaches, neck aches, and even carpal tunnel syndrome.

This is why its important to diet and exercise to increase height while youre young. Doing so will ensure that your body flourishes and grows as much as it can during this vital period. If youre past adulthood and wish to grow taller, dont lose hope. There are several height enhancing alterations you can make to your wardrobe, shoes, hair, and more to make yourself look taller and slimmer.

Fibromyalgia Symptoms - Often Confused As Flu

By Pat Colapinto

Fibromyalgia symptoms are more often than not confused as being the influenza virus. Fibromyalgia syndrome is a chronic illness associated with widespread pain in the soft tissues of the body. This syndrome afflicts 6 million people in the United States. Most of the 6 million are women. The syndrome is chronic which means that it can last years if not a lifetime. The pain of fibromyalgia can affect any part of the body. This symptom is similar to having the flu for an extended period of time.

Besides widespread pain, fibromyalgia has other symptoms associated with it also. The other main symptom is fatigue. Remember how you felt the last time you had the flu or a severe cold. Fibromyalgics experience that run down, tired feeling the majority of the time. The fatigue is usually caused by the lack of deep sleep. Deep sleep is when the body restores itself. Constant sleep disturbances from widespread pain does not allow for those afflicted with fibromyalgia to enter into deep sleep. Thus, even after sleeping for ten to twelve hours, a fibromyalgic does not feel refreshed.

Chronic headaches are another common symptom of fibromyalgia. Typically, patients with fibromyalgia suffer from either tension headaches, migraines or a combination of both. Tension headaches are caused by the tensing of the muscles in the neck region. The muscle tension spreads until it eventually enters the temples. Migraines can affect any part of the head. They can also move from side to side. Migraines are caused by the constriction and sudden dilation of the blood vessels in the brain. As the vessels constrict blood flow is slowed. Once the vessels dilate, the blood rushes back causing pain.

Costochondritis is a less common, yet scary, symptom of fibromyalgia. Costochondritis causes chest pains that mimic a heart attack. These pains are caused by the inflammation of the cartilage between the rib cage and the sternum.

This inflammation can last months and chronic costochondritis is not uncommon among fibromyalgics.

Angular Cheilosis is Embarrassing and Painful

By Bart Icles

Someone who has suffered angular cheilosis in the past knows how much it difficult, painful, and embarrassing it is to have. Because it is situated in the only part of our body that is always exposed to the outside world, and to all the people that we meet, it can rather have a very negative effect for any body's psyche - most especially our self-esteems. It starts out simply as little patches of dried skin, and not worth our immediate attention. Days later its already progressed into deep cracks and painful sores that may any movement extremely painful. Then you begin to panic and wonder what is happening to your mouth.

What you may already have is a full blown case of angular cheilosis, also known as angular cheilitis, angular stomatitis, or perleche. The first stage - the dry lips and slight cracking, is but a warning of what impending danger is about to come. What makes this condition so frustrating to have is that it greatly affects most of our every day normal function such as, talking, eating, smiling, and laughing. Though not life-threatening it can be hard on a person's self-esteem.

For children and teenagers who have it can mean some form of ridicule or teasing from friends and playmates, that could lead to the victim to become withdrawn, and socially scarred if not addressed properly. For adults and the elderly, it could mean embarrassing and awkward moments with office mates, friends, and neighbors, and to a limited social life and half-hearted interaction with family members.

One of the most distinguishing and prominent features of a person is the face. When the mouth is covered with hideous sores, cracks, and red rashes, its hard to find the courage to approach, much less talk to that person without giving way to some form of revulsion, pity, or wariness. Its only understandable to do so, but in all fairness to anyone who has fallen victim to this chronic condition, its not highly contagious and shouldn't be cause for undue alarm.

Angular cheilosis caught at its early stages - slight dryness and minor cracking of the skin on the lips, can be prevented into becoming advanced and full-blown cases where the presence blood, skin rashes, and infected sores can end up with more excruciating pain and discomfort that could last from weeks or months - depending on the treatment being administered, and to how the victim responds to the medicines.

Slight dryness of the lips can be addressed with applying a medicated lip balm. Sometimes early treatment can keep the problem from escalating. With a poor diet or an unhealthy lifestyle, you may need vitamin supplements to boost your immune system.

Holiday in Scotland and Visit The Bowmore Distillery

By Rachel Wilson

Whether you are a whisky enthusiast or just enjoy the occasional dram, a visit to a whisky distillery to see at first hand how your favourite single malt is crafted from the natural ingredients of the Scottish landscape, can be both memorable and enjoyable. Islay is the Southernmost of the Western isles and well worth a visit just for the scenery alone, but there are no fewer than eight distilleries to visit, producing some of the best single malt whisky.

It is not difficult to find excellent accommodation on Islay and at Bowmore distillery they even have their own holiday cottages where you can stay and enjoy a complementary tour of the distillery and sample their excellent single malt whisky. There are 130 miles of beautiful coastline, around which seven of the distilleries are sited. The inhabitants number approximately 3500 and there is a strong community spirit. There are a number of festivals throughout the year including the festival of Malt and Music in May, which celebrates the rich heritage in Whisky production on Islay.

The first record of whisky making in Scotland goes back to 1494 and is thought to have been started by Irish monks. Many of the distilleries started out as farms where home stills were used to produce grain spirit. The process of distilling began after the harvest and continued until late April This cycle has continued down the centuries, and even today many of the distilleries are closed in August for the 'silent season'.

Bowmore Distillery in the town of Bowmore on the shores of Loch Indaal is the oldest on Islay and one of the oldest in Scotland; established in 1779 by David Simpson a local merchant and pioneer who built the distillery, produced the whisky and introduced Islay whisky to the world. Bowmore Distillery has changed hands four times in the last 200 years but traditional methods of production are still used and handed down by word of mouth.

A single malt whisky is the product of a single distillery and no two distilleries produce the same flavour and body. The distilleries to the south of Islay produce the most powerful medium bodied flavours with the use of the islands peat water for every stage of production, and those to the north produce much milder flavours since they use clear spring water. Bowmore is in the middle of the island and the flavour it produces comes between the two extremes having a warm smoky character with peaty, toffee flavours and some floral scents and traces of linseed oil.

During the winter gales sea spray carried on the wind soaks into the peat which covers the island and this adds to the distinctive quality of Islay malt whisky. Bowmore distillery uses the uncontaminated, peat laden water from the Laggan River, the peat is infused with the richness of the heather and other flora which grow on it and this enriches the flavour and colour of the whisky.

Bowmore Distillery is one of only a few left to produce its own floor malted barley. The barley used is sourced from the east of Scotland and the island peat is used in the malting process. Malting the barley changes its chemical makeup and after soaking, the barley is drained and spread out over a large floor and turned regularly by the malt man using the traditional wooden malt shovel.

At Bowmore Distillery traditional methods are used by a very experienced team, most of whom have worked at the distillery for many years. Demand for Bowmore single malt whisky is high and it is exported to forty countries around the world. A bottle of Black Bowmore, distilled in 1897 was recently sold at auction for 1400. The whisky if left to mature in the famous Bowmore vaults where the damp cellars are below sea level, keeping them at a constant temperature the year round, stored in casks of Spanish and American Oak which adds to the rich mellow flavours of the maturing whisky. The workforce take great pride in the single malt whisky they produce and their constant efforts make Bowmore a world class dram.
